Jacks_Smart Defense
Recently, I have been getting a lot of inquires about my Flash/Flex abilities. The Flash/Flex section of my resume is also the most visited. I feel a little unprepared because really don't have anything that is in good condition to show. Jacks_Clan was my first Flex website, I learned a lot but I would not like to show that to a prospective client. I started work on a Flex game a while ago too. I gave up on it because Flash had poor 3d support. (This is when Papervision was still private beta) Then I could not get the vanishing point algorithms working right and I just decided I was asking too much of Flash. There is one piece of work that I am always willing to show off though. The video player I did for Burrus Research. Even though it was done in Flex, it really lacks the Flex UI. So its not clear that it was done in Flex. Over all, I would have to say the showing of my Flex abilities is quite poor. I do have some fun little things I made in flash located in my archives. Still not that impressive though.
So, lets cut to the chase. I am going to build an open source flash game using the flex compiler. I will use the Flex UI and the animations will be done in Flash. I decided to go with the Tower Defense genre. Because there are a lot of fun tower defense games out there but nothing that keeps me coming back. Also, I want to make it completely expandable so that there can be several different mods. The title that I am running with at this point is "Smart Defense". The biggest difference between this and other tower defense games is that the enemy's will be smarter. The attack waves are not pre-programmed, but decided by algorithms. So, depending on what towers you place where, the game is never the same twice.
Like all good games, I am simply going to define the rules and let the game run its course. Some things I would like to establish early on are: I want the attacker and the defender to have the exact same income. All units and upgrades are priced for how much damage they do on average. I want a small amount of physics in the game, so accuracy counts! I am also playing around with the idea that it could be multilayer. One or more attackers vs. One or more defenders.
More info as development progresses.
